Concept to Construction

TVTableNext.jpg picture by weekender410

A short time ago I had a request to demonstrate how I would convert a concept drawing to construction drawings.

While in the early stages of developing a design for a project, it makes little sense to draw in details that won't be visible. The model can be kept very simple until you and/or the client have settled upon the final design. The simple model is much easier to edit as needed. Also you don't have a lot of time invested in details that might be changed or discarded in the end.

After getting to the final design stage, it is now time to work out the joinery and then move on to the development of construction drawings. The attached video attempts to demonstrate how to move from a concept drawing of the cabinet shown, above, to a model made of components that can be pulled apart for dimensioning for use in construction documents. This video does not go through dimensions and construction departemnts. That's for a future installment. Tim Killen has shown quite a number of drawings that show that part of the process so you might want to look back at his blog posts for some ideas. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions

In the video I make reference to a plugin called Apply To. You can get this plugin as well as many others from Smustard.com

I'd like to extend my thanks to my brother for his model.
