Gadget Station Design Challenge
Time: 14:23
Submitted by: Marc Spagnuolo, TheWoodWhisperer.com
Phoenix, Arizona

It’s been a few months since we caught up with Marc over at TheWoodWhisperer.com, so we thought that his latest episode (featured above) was a good opportunity to bring the Web-savvy woodworker back into the GlueTube spotlight. Marc has been extremely prolific since we first profiled him on our site in January 2007, just after he published episode 4 of his video podcast.

Now he’s up to episode 57, and along the way has developed a co-branded project with FineWoodworking.com (check it out) and has another furniture project in the pipeline with us, he produces videos for his sponsors, and he just launched his new self-titled column in Popular Woodworking magazine.

Over the same period, the Web has also exploded with new video podcasts, blogs, and Web sites devoted to woodworking, built with the same garage-shop passion that has made The Wood Whisperer a success. We took a minute this morning to pick Marc's brain on the subject of user-generated woodworking content. Here's what he had to say during a phone conversation:

“My biggest observation over the past two years is that there was clearly an underlying community of people who were waiting for an opportunity to have a voice. And as the current generation of young people get older, that expectation for interactivity and valued voice is going to be so much clearer. They’re going to expect it."

A recent comment on GlueTube prompted us to ask Marc the question about quality. With all the amateur woodworking information popping up on the Web, how should users know what to trust?

"It’s the internet, just like anything else, you have to have some discretion in what you choose to follow. I think if someone is out there putting out bad information you’ll be able to see that. Read the comments. Typically, the community will weed these people out. But at the same time, I do find it very intriguing that there are so many people who are early in their woodworking growth documenting their journey. But they’re disclosing everything. They’re saying 'look, I'm a beginning woodworker but this is my experience.'"

And finally, some advice for those of you who are itchin' to become an Internet woodworking star (and please do, GlueTube can use the content):

"I would probably say aside from good information, the most important thing is to remember to make a video that you would want to watch. Think about what you would want to see with your valuable time, and that generally will guide you into making a very clear and concise production."

Thanks for your time Marc!

Reviewing the Earlex Spray Station

In our latest issue of Fine Woodworking magazine (on newsstands and online this week), we decided to take another look at the low-cost Earlex Spray Station Pro System. One of our authors surveyed the product a few months back in issue #194 as part of our article Spray-Gun Choices, but we quickly received a letter from the company questioning our testing methods, so we decided to give the spray system a second try. Tying in nicely with our review is this 20-minute demonstration of the tool (embedded above) produced by Marc Spagnuolo over at www.TheWoodWhisperer.com. Take a look if you're on the market for an entry-level spray finishing system.

Wood Whisperer Weekend Marathon!

We first came across The Wood Whisperer video podcast while searching the Web for anything interesting we could find on the subject of woodworking. We never expect to come across anyone as fresh and imaginative as Marc Spagnuolo, the actor/editor/producer behind the weekly video production. But we're glad we did, and now we want to help spread the word.

This weekend GlueTube is celebrating the success of The Wood Whisperer with a marathon broadcast of his some of the classic early episodes. So get yourself a bag of popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the show. And do your part to support Marc by visiting his Web site for more videos and tips from his workshop.

The Wood Whisperer: Episode 6
