Behind the Scenes in the New Yankee Workshop
Time: 3:03
Submitted By: John Dodge, Editor-in-Chief of DesignNews.com
Waltham, Mass.

If you're a Norm Abram fan then we have found your Xanadu.

Browsing around the Web this week we came across a mondo series of videos, audio interviews, photos, and articles that take you behind the scenes of the venerable woodworking television show, The New Yankee Workshop. In what appears to be a marathon session of face time with Norm and his executive producer Russell Morash, Design News editor-in-chief John Dodge takes viewers on a guided tour of Norm's shop (embedded above) and explores a host of topics with the dynamic duo of how-to television.

There are some great gems of information and entertainment packed into the series, including a close-up look at an electric spokeshave, which Norm received in the mail from one of his faithful viewers. Take a look at the Design News Web site for links to all of the videos in the series.

Shop Tours Galore

I've never met a woodworker who didn't love a good workshop tour, whether its because they like to borrow great shop ideas or just engage in some good old fashioned voyeurism.

The advent of Internet home video distribution means that there are more and more digital windows into the garages, basements, and backyard workshops of the world. In fact, a recent Video Shop Tour contest hosted by the good folks at LumberJocks.com has added 24 great shop tour video to the mix. So if you're too tired to head out into your own shop, take a break and visit someone else's shop from the comfort of your own home.

A Real Basement Workshop

Holy Moly! And you thought you're shop space was creative. You haven't seen anything until you watch this video shop tour by ex-pat woodworker Stu Ablett, of Tokyo, Japan.

Affectionately dubbed his "Dungeon Workshop," the cramped and cozy basement quarters is accessible from a hatch in the floor and a steep flight of stairs, but it is jam packed with dust collection, innovative storage solutions, and all the basic tools. The question is, how did he get everything through the hatch?
