Taper Safely!
Time: 17:58
Submitted by: Charles Neil, In The Workshop
New Market, Virginia

We've got another project from the workshop of Charles Neil. This time it's a handy tablesaw tapering jig that can be built from basic shop materials and accessories. Charles was kind enough to include a free plan for the jig, available as a PDF download.

We've seen countless ways to taper legs for furniture such as tables and chairs, and we've published our share of project plans and videos on FineWoodworking.com. One of our favorites is the safe and simple design from Alan Turner, who runs the Philadelphia Furniture Workshop in, you guessed it, Philadelphia. Charles' jig takes a slightly different approach to the task. For a full list of other designs, take a look at the results of a search for "tapering jigs" on our site.

A 'Smart' Jig for Hand-Cut Dovetails

Smart Tails
Time: 20:47
Submitted by: Charles Neil, In The Workshop
New Market, Virgina

There's no shame in looking for ways to perfect your handcut dovetails. Especially for those of us who don't cut dovetails with a handsaw everyday, it's hard to expect good results everytime. So the plethora of commercial jigs, hand-saw depth stops, and other gadgets and gizmos that claim to get the job done faster and better can serve as great ways to improve your results.

That's why we were so smitten by this do-it-yourself dovetail jig demonstrated by Charles Neil, host of the video podcast In The Workshop. In addtion to showing you how to use it, Charles has made available a downloadable PDF with measured drawings that will help you make it.

Try it out and post a comment below to let us know how it works for you!

A Primer on Shellac

Shellac - A Woodworker's Best Friend
Time: 7:36
Submitted by: Charles Neil, In The Workshop
New Market, Virginia

Shellac really is one of the most forgiving furniture finishes there is. It's easy to apply, it dries quickly thanks to its alcohol base, it can be repaired easily to give a piece of furniture protection for life, and it provides a rich, fine finish for many woods. It's also environmentally friendly: shellac is derived from the secretions of the Lac bug and when dry it's completely non-toxic.

While we've covered the subject of Shellac with more than a dozen articles and videos here on FineWoodworking.com, we thought this video by Charles Neil, host of the video podcast In The Workshop, was a nice refresher course.

An easy way to repair a check

An easy way to repair a check
Time: 3:33
Submitted by: Charles Neil
New Market, Virginia

In this brief video, Charles Neil shows how to eliminate a check from a board with several rounds of bandsawing, gluing, and more bandsawing. The result is a nearly invisible repair that preserves as much of the wood's grain and figure as possible.
